Dustform
A super fast and efficient CAD/CAM solution with AI superpowers
Dustform is a browser-based CAD / CAM for carpenters and woodworkers. Traditional CNC workflows split the process into two phases: CAD for drawing the part, CAM for generating the tool paths. Dustform combines both into a single interface.
An AI agent is built into the application. You can describe a shape, ask it to move or modify elements, and it acts directly on the model. The tool path updates as you work. The project started as a personal experiment in whether that two-step workflow could actually be collapsed without sacrificing precision, and got to a working prototype before development paused.
Productivity first
Dustform is simple by design. It is primarily a 2D sketching tool, so the tooling needs to be optimized for this.
This includes an easy to understand tool palette, instant snapping and essential editing features. The goal is not to build complex geometries but rather create the easy ones within a couple of clicks.
Tool management built in
In order for the workflow to be as quick as possible, tools and cutting strategies can be applied right in the sketching process. This allows to spot issues quickly and also assign the correct cutting depths and widths while building the sketch.
AI agent as assistant
AI can be used to template and sketch out drafts or carry out bulk operations. This reduces the amount of specific tools needed and accelerates the processes immensely.
Current state
Dustform was an expriment on how CAD could work in the browser and how agents can work with spatial data.
It was a self-initiated project that then was stopped in favor of other projects. Should you be interested in continuing this work or pivoting into toward a different use case – get in touch!
