Transforming scrap into weird and interesting drawing devices
A course run at ABK Stuttgart over several years. Students in their first year took apart old office equipment — mostly printers and scanners — and rebuilt the parts into drawing machines.
By building from salvage, students had to understand the mechanics before they could control the drawing. Motor speed, step timing, mechanical resistance became design decisions rather than technical constraints to work around. The resulting drawings were abstract, generated from hardware that used to print documents. The project won the competitionline campus competition in the faculty projects category.
